The Valley of Light

Recently, someone asked me where my name comes from. I have known the answer but never sought to understand it.

A quick google search suggests it to be an Old German or Danish name originally portraying “the Saxon people”. The Saxons were a group of Germanic people from the early Middle Ages (410 AD) who occupied a large country near the North Sea coast of northern Germania, now Germany. I point out, Saxons were not Vikings, they were civilised and peace loving farmers, compared to the sea pirates and warrior Vikings. The Anglo and Saxon tribes merged together, leaving their legacy, the English language.

The meaning of Saskia is “valley of light”.

A valley symbolises fertility and life, abundance in many forms, a safe space to cultivate and flourish. A valley represents yin, emptiness, the shadow side which creates change.

Light symbolises understanding, life, happiness, the opposite of darkness. Light conveys positivity, hope, and guidance. Used to illuminate mind and spirit, and bring awareness of the future.

The deeper we integrate, the deeper our healing.

Another suggestion is that it is of Slavic origin to mean “protector of mankind”, but I won’t say much on this definition.
