Finding Space is a present-minded counselling practice.

This is a concept developed by Saskia combining Eastern philosophical and Western psychological learnings.

The focus of each session is guided towards becoming more aware in the present moment. Supported by a trauma-informed and person-centred foundation, the aim is to bring the whole mind, body and spirit into each session. This could be somatic exploration, solution-focussed discussions, or sitting in silence.

As you learn to shift your focus away from other times, a space arises, and this space is where the healing happens. In this space, you are open to peace and presence. And this is how you’ll heal from trauma, grief, and anxieties.

Sessions always consider the whole person’s psychological, emotional, spiritual, and physical wellbeing.

Taoism is an Eastern philosophy which emphasises living in harmony with the Tao, a fundamental principle of the universe.

Tao (pronounced like ‘down’ without the ‘n’) translates to “the way”, “the path” or “principle”, but without context, the true meaning is not understood.

Tao is the force in all things, the energy that helps a plant grow, the pattern of the sun rising and setting, and the spirit within you.

When we focus on this energy, we become more present, more peaceful, and more open to life’s experiential offerings.

  • A. The first session is the place where you and your counsellor get to know each other. This could involve a lot of talking from you, and a lot of listening from your counsellor. If you’re not the talking type, or just not ready to talk freely about the matter, your counsellor can assist with the questions. It is the space for you to develop a sense of safety that can be drawn from during future sessions, and the space for your counsellor to provide nourishment.

  • A. There is no minimum or fixed number of sessions that you need to attend. We will make a treatment plan together review this regularly

In general six counselling sessions to begin with but on many occasions more or less are appropriate. Clients can take an active role in determining how many sessions are needed, depending on your goals and level of distress.

Short term treatments often range from 4 - 12 sessions. Longer term treatments can also help with more complex or longer standing issues.

Most clients attend weekly or fortnightly, and will often drop down to monthly sessions when they feel they are ready. Therapy is a long-term journey of commitment, growth and investment in yourself. After a while, you may continue to book occasional check-in sessions as you feel more confident in your day to day life with the knowledge and tools you have gained.

  • A. Cancellation/reschedule within 24 hours of appointment time will incur a 100% session fee.
