The Law of Unintended Consequences
Firstly, by definition, this law states that whilst we are aware that there will be both the result and succeeding consequences of our actions, there will always be resulting circumstances that were unexpected or unconsidered. This law, though perhaps unintentionally, brings awareness to the complexity of decision-making. So it is no wonder why some people struggle with indecisiveness and enjoy having set plans of actions provided to them.
In deciding, we are giving away the other option. We are solidifying our stance towards the option we have chosen and to some degree adopting this choice as ‘ours’. Though there is something more difficult than making decisions, and that is being indecisive, fickle. In deciding, we are directing our energy down that path, but when we are indecisive, our energy is not directed. It is chaotic. A waste of energy.
Notwithstanding the above - that what we choose become ours - in most circumstances we can change an undesirable decision. It is simply our own beliefs which keep us from changing our circumstances. Take for example, you are to decide between going to the beach or going to the forest. You choose the beach but when you arrive it is windy and cold. The next decision becomes whether you accept this situation and find peace in it, or change your itinerary.
Unfortunately, most people get stuck in the disappointment of the situation. This is because when the decision to go to the beach was made, there was an expectation of what it would be like.
“Expectation is the root of all heartache”
Although your original choice was between the beach and the forest, it is now between the circumstances and your joy. The same can be said for most situations. Going to the gym or staying home, spending a large sum of money or saving, enrolling in further education or having spare time. Regardless of the decision you make, your next decision will be whether you accept this situation and find peace in it, or change your itinerary. If you only make half a decision, where you make a choice and are dissatisfied, you leave yourself vulnerable to chaotic energy, distrust in oneself.
So now that there is a better understanding of decision making, the consequences of our actions are not so daunting, but the unintended consequences may be beneficial. It is up to you to decide which path will direct you.
Just know that in making no choice, that is also a choice. Accept it.
